How to Measure Your Part for a Custom 3D Design

To design a part that fits properly, I need clear measurements and photos showing those measurements. Please follow the steps below.

What you’ll need

  • A digital calliper (best option), or
  • A metal ruler for simpler shapes
  • A phone or camera to take clear photos

Avoid soft tape measures where possible.

Step 1: Use millimetres (mm) only

All measurements must be in millimetres (mm).
Do not use centimetres or inches.

If your calipers can switch units, double-check it’s set to mm before measuring.

Step 2: Take a photo of every measurement

For every measurement you send, please include a photo showing how it was taken.

This means:

  • The object and measuring tool are both visible
  • The measurement numbers can be clearly read
  • The measuring tool is aligned with the dimension being measured

Example:
If you write “Length: 65 mm”, include a photo of the object sitting on a ruler or calliper showing 65 mm.

This avoids confusion about which dimension the number refers to.

Step 3: Measure the object, not the space

Measure the actual object, not the gap or location where it will be installed.

For example:

  • Measure the outside diameter of a pipe, not the hole it fits into
  • Measure the shaft, not the bearing opening

Include a photo of the measurement.

Step 4: Measure each dimension more than once

Measure each dimension two or three times, repositioning the tool each time.

If results vary, include:

  • The most common measurement
  • A note saying it was measured multiple times

Photos of the clearest reading are perfect.

Step 5: Capture the full shape

Please include measurements (with photos) for:

  • Overall length
  • Overall width
  • Overall height
  • Any holes (diameter and depth)
  • Any slots, cut-outs, steps, or tapers
  • Wall thicknesses, if relevant

If something looks symmetrical, still measure both sides and photograph them.

Step 6: Measuring holes

For holes:

  • Measure the diameter
  • Measure the depth
  • Note whether the hole goes all the way through

If possible, take two photos of the diameter from different angles.

Step 7: Label your measurements

When sending measurements:

  • Label each one clearly (e.g. Overall Length, Hole A Diameter)
  • Match labels to your photos if possible
  • Do not round numbers unless necessary

Example:

Hole A diameter: 12.3 mm
Hole A depth: 8.1 mm

Step 8: Include overview photos

Alongside measurement photos, please include:

  • Clear photos of the entire object from all sides
  • Close-ups of complex or critical areas

Good lighting helps. Phone photos are completely fine.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Sending measurements without photos
  • Guesstimating measurements
  • Measuring once and assuming it’s correct. Remeber to zero your calipers before taking each measurements
  • Assuming symmetry without checking

Next steps

Once you’ve taken your measurements and photos:

  1. Email everything to
    hello@bogneraqua.com.au
  2. Please include:
    • All measurement photos (measuring tool visible and readable)
    • Any overview or close-up photos
    • A short description of what the part needs to do
    • How many parts you’d like made
  3. I’ll review the measurements and get back to you with:
    • Any clarifying questions (if needed)
    • Design recommendations
    • A quote and estimated turnaround time

If something was difficult to measure or you’re unsure about a dimension, include a note so I can double-check the details with you.
